Junior Championships 2020

 Held at

Ashley Wood

(By Kind Permission)

On Thurday 13th August

Congratulations to Hermione Christey-Clover, 2020 Dorset Ladies Golf Junior Champion. She won both the gross championship and the nett (nett 64).

Captain’s Report

I usually begin my reports by talking about the weather, but this was no ordinary Dorset Ladies’ Junior Championship. This is the first championship of the year as we have had to cancel most of our other competitions because of Coronavirus. It was wonderful to finally be able to see the wealth of young talent we have on offer in Dorset.

I would like to thank Steve Sanger and his team for all their hard work. He was so helpful and supportive in light of all of the extra measures we have had to put in this year. Ashley Wood has a long history of being a very good friend to the county.

The greenkeepers had done a magnificent job. The course was in super condition, especially in light of the weather we have had for the past few months.

I’d also like to thank Chris, the men’s captain who came out to support us. The ladies captain Maxine Palmer was also on hand. It was very good of them to give up their time.

The girls arrived maintaining social distancing and following all of the rules and all seemed very pleased to be able to meet up again. The morning round of the championship was to be followed by the Birdie competition.

At the end of the morning round Hermione Christey-Clover came in with a magnificent gross 70, with Lilli Horn 2nd on 72 and Ellie Mans close behind on 73(CB) and Chloe Haesler – also on 73. It was shaping up to be an excellent afternoon of golf.

The girls set off at 2pm, but unfortunately we started to hear some rumbles of thunder in the distance. At about 3.00pm, just as we thought the weather had passed us by, there was forked lightning behind the clubhouse. The afternoon championship round had to be abandoned and the Birdie competition postponed. It was such a shame!

This meant that the competition became an eighteen-hole competition with Hermione winning both the gross championship and the nett (nett 64). Huge congratulations go to Hermione, our Junior Captain. Lilli Horn was very creditable runner up in the gross.  Imogen Stratman was runner up in the nett competition with nett 69 (CB). Well done Imogen!

Sadly, Sheila our Junior Organiser was unable to be there. She would have so proud of the girls. There was some excellent golf on show and they played the game in a such a good spirited manner. They were all a fantastic advert for junior girls’ golf.

Thanks to all of the parents who came to support their children. We couldn’t have managed without them.

I would also like to say a big thank you to Martin Purchase of the Junior Committee and Kay Everett from Ashley Wood for giving up their day to be there. Their help was invaluable.

Lastly, I’d like to thank the Exec team of Val Ford - our President, Kate Roberts - County Vice Captain and Annie Hobell our Treasurer. They have all worked hard to ensure that this competition was able to go ahead in the current climate.

It was a pleasure to see all of the girls and I wish them well for their golfing futures. It looks very bright.
