Dorset Ladies County Golf Association

Dudsbury GC Closes on March 31st 2024.

Alison Sleat. The Last Lady Captain of Dudsbury GC

A Few words from Alison Sleat. Dudsbury's Last Lady Captain.

The end of March will sadly see the final closure of Dudsbury Golf Course after more
than 30 years operation. Whilst there are no immediate plans for work to begin, the
entire site (including the hotel/club house and associated buildings) has been sold for
future development.
It is so upsetting that Dorset is losing such a lovely and challenging course. Dudsbury
Ladies were enthusiastic participants in many County Events and, despite being a small
section in recent years, we often performed very well. We always entered teams in the
County Foursomes and Interclub matches, and many of our ladies took part in individual
events including the Spring and Autumn Meetings, County Championship and
Bowmaker. I am sure we will be missed in our familiar magenta and white colours.
Following the shock announcement in October, most of the ladies' section have now
found new golf clubs and are spread across Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. I know
they have received a warm welcome at their new golfing homes and no doubt many of
them will appear at County Events in their new club colours.
Unfortunately, there has been very little opportunity to play over the winter months due
to the prolonged wet weather, so the ladies didn’t have the chance for a final round
together at Dudsury, although a members’ farewell event is planned for 30 th March. The
friendships formed over so many years will no doubt endure, however, and many
‘reciprocal’ games and days out will be arranged over the summer.
As the last ever Lady Captain of Dudsbury Golf Club I would like to take this opportunity
to thank all the ladies that made me so welcome and supported me, both at the club
and across the County, and hope to see many of you somewhere on a course in the
future. Happy golfing (when and if the rain finally stops!)
